Steve & Phil, That Bat is a columb mounted Gear Pre selector. It was a stationary growth from the
columb. It does not move just houses the various cables and wiring so the owner could pre select what gear they were in sort of an early automatic and the Buzz accessory of the time. Other manufacturers (Cord + Others) offered this too. Google 39 Gear Pre selector for an explanation of how it works then you will understand the size. The dash is a little flat and cound have been much more, but Jim Cowen said it would drive up the cost and subsequently the retail so they did it as a print rather than a two piece with a lens. That is too bad as the car is outstanding, DROP DEAD GORGEOUS but with this flaw it is very noticable.
