The great American 2-door hardtop, 1967 edition, Pt. XIX: Buick Riviera (PICS)
Few automobiles were blessed with a more auspicious beginning than that of the Buick Riviera. The original 1963 style is still regarded as a modern classic -- one of the finest designs of the 1960's and among the most beautiful automobiles ever built. The Riviera had a lot to live up to with its 1966 re-design, and the car needed to share its inner body structure with Oldsmobile's new Toronado. Nonetheless, the '66 Riviera and very similar '67 model were generally regarded as worthy successors -- stunning automobiles in their own right. The auto magazines continued to praise the Riviera, which they considered alone at the top among American automobiles, a grand touring coupe that approached the standard of cars like the Bentley Continental. Buick was very intentional about sticking with the Riviera's rear-drive layout, offering an alternative to the front wheel drive Toronado and Eldorado. In Motor Trend's five car personal luxury comparison, the Riviera was regarded as the star performer of the group, thanks to the 430-cid V8 of all new design and Buick's massive finned aluminum brakes. The magazine called the Riviera a truly superb road car.
