CAUTION new HWY SCAM by Police!!!!!
A friend of mine called me today and informed me that he got a ticket on I-86. He said that he saw a Cop on the SHOULDER of the road (two lane HWY in each direction). Said HWY Patrol car was NOT in the right lane at all, but completely on the shoulder, lights flashing. Upon approaching the Patrol car my friend tried to slow down and move into the left lane but traffic wasnt allowing him to do so and he then proceeded to pass the cop car while traveling in the RIGHT lane. (Cop to my friends right side). Low and behold he said the Cop then pulled out, chased down my friend, pulled him over and issued him a summons for NOT changing lanes and leaving a "free" lane of space while he passed the Patrol car! THe cop said something that he (my friend) was supposed to yield right of way to an emergency vehicle!!!! My friend then said I tried to move over and change lanes but wasnt let in and should he have came to a STOP on the HWY???? The Cops answer was to go to court to fight the summons if he felt it was unwarranted!!! So low and behold I looked up to see IF there was some such law and Ive found its almost state wide. IF your on a roadway and are passing an emergency vehicle (cop, ambulance, etc) you are by law supposed to change lanes even if said vehicle is NOT On the roadway but is adjacent to your lane! My friend said he saw THREE Patrol cars in a 2 mile stretch constantly pulling people over. SO the gimick is that they just SIT on the side of the road, lights flashing and wait for ANY motorist to pass without changing lanes and then pull them over to issue a summons! This is OBVIOUSLY being done to create revenue for that particular town/county! If this isnt sickening I dont know what is! Further more it creates a possible situation to cause an accident as the motorist must now move over abruptly when he sees a cop on the shoulder and risk cutting someone off, or might slow down and get rear ended all because said COP is actually NOT stopped for any particular reason other then to purposly pull over someone who dosnt change lanes!!!! He isnt sitting there for an accident, or because he pulled over a speeder or drunk driver etc. Im refering to todays situation where the 3 cruisers were obviously just sent out to "trap" people who dont follow this law that nobody even knows exists!! All said PLEASE change lanes when approaching a cop car thats pulled over to avoid a costly summons, grief and possible insurance increases! for warned is fore armed as they say!!!!
