I am definitely not an expert and am only spreading here say but
I don't think it is biased on the chassis, but the Mustang,s long hood and short trunk seems to dictate the Pony car. Heck the older Barracuda's are the same chassis as the Dart, Valiant, and later the Duster, Scamp, Demon all of which I believe are compacts. Hence the Falcon is a compact and the Mustang is a Pony Car.
