With much that you said.

The scary part is that in 20, 30 + years from now, there will probably be even more restrictions, etc., and the cars we drive now will be the ones that future drivers will see as being so much freer in design in comparison to then just as we see in older cars now.

I'm not sure I totally agree about the modifications however. From what I remember from my youth, we did pretty much the same thing as far as modifications go with anything we owned, just like now. It isn't until we get older and remember them nostalgically/or start collecting them that we do it for what they were, not what we made them at the time. I'm wondering if that isn't still true to a large extent, only the interests in how or what is modified is what has changed. Interesting thoughts all the way around, I think.
