My personal opinion - for what it's worth - is
the 80s, with few exceptions, was pretty much the low point for the car industry as a whole. And it took the 90s and a busted economy to finally make them step it up. In fact, I think the only company you can point to as trying to push the envelope again during that time was Chrysler, and its efforts were pretty much neutralized by a couple of bad owners. But at least they were trying and I think it did give them an advantage. I see the other companies as still trying to catch up with them.
