This new model is not just a ragtop iteration of the superb ’52 Hornet coupe. The image has been fully optioned for top-line luxury and elegance. Added touches include wire wheels, a right side exterior mirror, beautifully executed interior wood grain trim on the dash and door panels, rich-looking simulated leather seats, power windows and a working rear center armrest. The only detail missing is the doorsills which H61 included on the ’53 Hornet coupe. The “Toro Red” paint (a deep maroon) is glossy, even and a joy to behold. The foil trim is good…smoothly applied with few distracting ripples or wrinkles. I’ll go on the record and state my preference for real metal or chromed plastic trim (PM, for instance, has shown on their ‘50s images how refined this approach can be at a similar price point). But Highway 61 is committed to the technique, and it looks as well done as it can be on a mass-produced replica. The convertible top accessories are exceptional, the boot done in a flexible material with painted snaps and the up top beautifully textured and featuring brilliant chrome trim along the front and back edges. Both pieces fit snugly and securely, too. The continental spare may be a sticking point for some…this feature seems to polarize collectors, and certainly it’s more attractive and appropriate on some cars than on others. I think it looks great on this car and it clearly adds to the impression of size and opulence. Furthermore, it’s not just a tacked-on afterthought, but a beautifully integrated, trimmed and functional feature in keeping with the rest of the model. As with the ’52 and ’53 Hornet coupes, this one’s powered by the gorgeously detailed Twin-H six, and there’s a raft of functioning features inside and out. In short, this is Highway 61 at the top of its game. 2. Jack Wells 10/11/11
