Here’s the thing:

  • A) It’s red.
  • Really red. Italian racing red. The kind of red that sells Italian scale models and real cars. That red.
  • 1960‘s Marcello Mastroianni era cool
  • Chrome accents and bezels along with flawless glazing look marvelous.
  • Love the teardrop, tilt-forward hood - with functional louvers.
  • It’s a Zagato, so it’s as voluptuous and sensual as automotive design gets
  • Alfa’s choice of wheels seem to be an afterthought
  • Gee, those tires are really big.
  • There’s a real spare tire in the boot - not just some plastic insert
  • Kamm Tail back end could double as a space capsule

The Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ was a purpose built protoype racer, winning a race in that category at Monza in 1963 and later homologated for its successful role as a GT racer. Built on a tubular space frame, it was an agile, lightweight coupe that boasted cutting edge aerodynamics , Some obvious like the “coda tronca” rear, lateral opening front windows and others not so much, such as mounting the 1570cc four banger engine at an angle.

You look how beautiful this Zagato bodied Italian thoroughbred is, especially outside in the sunlight, where automotive models really shine (literally) and this model is something to behold. For that reason, I've included AUTO art's photos with mine following. The sun electrifies it. Most of the the detail seems right though the large tires seem to throw the balance of it a little, but the basic shape of it very pleasing (and me, I love Zagato-bodied cars).

Some other period correct touches that look at first glance to be errors, such as the lack of rearview mirrors (as was the case with many of the era’s GT models such as the AM DB5) and shut lines that are more noticeable than the typical AUTO art fare, but period photos suggest that’s not unlike the original car. That’s something we tend to forget about cars of that vintage - there was no computer-aided design to tighten fit and finish.

Given AUTO art’s treatment of this Italian classic, I’m looking forward to the more curvy and more powerful TZ2. Now if they could only make a Ferrari....
