There’s a cartoon where some hipster guitarists try to shout down on another as to which legendary guitar maker is best: “Gibson” one says citing the maker of the famed Les Paul, “Fender” says the other countering with the maker of the stratocaster. It escalates back and forth “Gibson!, Fender!, Gibson! Fender!” finally a third guitarist pops up and yells “Grestch!” maker of the less famous but cool, stylish and refined hollow body electric. The other two promptly turn on him and proceed to pummel him...

It’s easy to think of the same argument taking place with Italian car companies, with tifosi yelling “Ferrari!” pitted against another screaming “Maserati”, or “Alfa Romeo”. But somewhere in the back of the room, a rebel would defiantly yell out “Lancia”. And it is that underdog and audacious spirit that has defined the company over the years, be it the 037, a tiger of the WRC or the CMC model we have here of the ground breaking1954-55 D 50.

For CMC, this is a bold model of a car with a unique feature set that gave it a lower center of gravity than it’s competitors. The most obvious component of that the pannier mounted fuel tanks, with fully functional openings which were intended to even the weight distribution as the fuel was consumed. While ingenious, this must have led to some long pitstops since each tank has a fill port, which in turn is among several liquid fill point that have working caps. has managed to replicate the remarkably complex fuel and cooling systems to an astonishing degree of accuracy. The separate battery trolley is included in production models but was not included with the review sample.

A less obvious but perhaps more impressive Lancia design innovation is the lightweight and compact V-8 engine a 90 degree cylinder anlge which CMC has modeled with exceptional detail complete with Solex Carbs and mounted as a stressed member of the chassis. To get the drive shaft, which was rotating in concert with the crankshaft revolution, to bypass the driver cabin, the engine was tilted off the longitudinal axis by 12° to the left. It is revealed by removing the bonnet secured with CMC’s typical spring loaded locks. Another radical departure is the gearbox mounted transversally just in front of the de Dion rear axle.

The combination of design innovations and poor company cashflow meant it took Lancia until Spanish Grand Prix, the last race of the 1954 season, to get it on the grid in the hands of Alberto Ascari. It performed at the front of the field before a failing gearbox claimed it on lap 9.  Unfortunately it came along to late and with too little result to keep Lancia an independent racing operation and the D 50 program’s asset were sold to the Ferrari team. Ferrari would end up utilizing much of the basic design and CMC plans on issuing the 1956 version in the future.

The model contains many special features we’ve come to take for granted with CMC artistry and craftsmanship. The spectacular wire wheels with correctly threaded locking nuts, the realistic interior featuring detailed gauges, the brilliant cora rossa paint and gleaming, precise metal work. The model is already a commercial success, with the #26 version that raced at Monaco in 1955 is pre-sold out among the dealer community. So pre-order if you’re serious about getting one. The model is a masterpiece of precision engineering by CMC, but the most likable part of it in my opinion is the character of the subject and the audacity and risk it took to make it at all.
