This 1/24 scale model is crafted with the attention to detail that we have come to expect in precision diecast replicas. In comparing this Shelby GT-500 to the other Mattel Legends cars, I would rate it above the Cadzilla, but not quite up to the '49 Merc standard. The cockpit features a full complement of Shelby engine gauges, a nicely detailed dash, a custom steering wheel and silver-colored shifter. The seat-backs fold to access the rear of the cockpit. Unfortunately, Mattel's attempt at replicating seat belts falls way short of being authentic. It has a highly detailed 428 cubic inch engine with realistic wires, hoses and belts and many other fine details in the engine compartment. The doors also open for easy viewing of the detailed interior. On the exterior, the fit and finish is as good as any Franklin Mint I have seen. Body stripes line up from end to end, and the Cobra emblems are nicely replicated on front, rear & sides. One downfall is that the trunk does not open. Overall I would rate ths model a solid 8.5. The Shelby also comes with a smaller 1:64 version in the widely recognized white and blue striped paint scheme. (07/24/2001) |
