RETIRED 12/31/00 It is somewhat unfortunate, though hardly surprising, that the ever-popular 1955-57 Chevy Bel Air Sports Coupes and Convertibles came along early in the chronology of precision replica history. An up-to-date makeover of these cars, by Danbury or Franklin, should be welcomed by collectors; but for now at least we must content ourselves with detailing standards and panel fit from an earlier era. My hands-down favorite among these long-in-the-tooth "Tri-Chevy" replicas is DM's '57 ragtop, as it genuinely captures the look of this milestone classic.

The 1995 re-issue brings about an operational trunk fitted with covered spare, jack and rubber mat; as well as vent window glazing, improved dashboard and upholstery rendition, realistic carpeting and a more authentic looking inside r/v mirror. Engine compartment detailing was left unchanged, but is still quite presentable. There are minimal wiring and plumbing enhancements, but the enormous oil bath air filter system of the dual 4-barrel equipped 283 c.i. V8 dominates the view. A 3-speed column shift tranny assures total performance.

Accessory twin rear antennas and rubber "dagmar" bumper guards are period touches, and the beautifully executed wheel covers feature accessory "knock-off" centers - and even valve stem representation. Tires appear to be exact replications of the 7.50 x 14 original equipment, with whitewalls of just the right width. Though dated, this unsung model will enhance any '50's theme collection. The current price is $112+ $7.80. (05/14/1999)
