It is somewhat unfortunate, though hardly surprising, that the ever-popular 1955-57 Chevy Bel Air Sports Coupes and Convertibles came along early in the chronology of precision replica history. An up-to-date makeover of these cars, by Danbury or Franklin, should be welcomed by collectors; but for now at least we must content ourselves with detailing standards and panel fit from an earlier era. My hands-down favorite among these long-in-the-tooth "Tri-Chevy" replicas is DM's '57 ragtop, as it genuinely captures the look of this milestone classic.

The trunk lid doesn't function on this original 1989 version, but opening the stylish hood reveals a dual 4-barrel equipped 283 c.i. V8. Wiring and plumbing are generally overlooked, but if present would be shrouded by the enormous oil bath air filter system. The 3-speed column shift tranny assures total performance.

Accessory twin rear antennas and rubber "dagmar" bumper guards are period touches, and the beautifully executed wheel covers feature accessory "knock-off" centers - and even valve stem representation. Tires appear to be exact replications of the 7.50 x 14 original equipment, with whitewalls of just the right width. Though dated, this unsung model will enhance any '50's theme collection.
