By 1972, the pickup had moved off the farm and business lot and solidly into the 'burbs. It seemed suburbanites liked the low cost, dependability, and versatility of their "second cars." To attract more suburbanite buyers, pickup truck manufacturers started adding car amenities and car-like names. Before long, the once-frugal pickup also sported car prices. The Chevrolet Series C10 "Cheyenne" pickup is a prime example of the breed.

DM's soon-to-be-retired first image of this Cheyenne begat a whole line of "liveried" (eight so far) sports team images. It has a working suspension, drop-down tailgate, and sliding rear windows. DM has come up with a button under the bumper to "pop" the hood, a handy feature (also on the '69 GTO Judge) I'd like to see more of. Generally, the detailing is good all around, especially in the cab and engine compartments. My only quibble is with the clunky, oversized shift lever. The paint is flawlessly applied and the chrome parts are on the money. Though the image looks simplistic at first, all the optional stuff is present: wood-grained dash, carpeted cab, cab roof lights, cargo compartment light, right side mirror, front bumper guards, full-sized hubcaps, and bed-mounted spare tire. It's yet another fine image from "The Pickup Kings" at DM.

I once owned a 1971 Chevy ½-ton. Seeing the wide, square hood on this image takes me back nearly three decades, to a time just before the gas crisis, when vehicles were generally bigger and life seemed simpler somehow. The issue price is $118 + $6 S&H. (11/17/1999)
