In the 1950s, pickups weren’t the trendy rage they are today, with leather upholstery, cruise control, a/c, and stereo CD players on the option list. Automakers were just beginning to cater to the non-business and non-farmer market—for example, the Chevy Cameo Carrier pickup. The 1958 Apache was one of the “workhorse” varieties of pickups—Spartan, solid, and dependable. Spartan, solid, and dependable pretty much describes this Dawn Blue-painted 1:24 scale image from DM. One of its older-technology images, it has next-to-no whistles and bells, even considering the simplicity of the 1:1 vehicle. Nevertheless, the paint and chrome are shiny and there are real wood strips in the bed. The tailgate lowers and there is a cloth-covered removable spare (a nice touch) mounted on the driver’s side bed. Under-hood detailing is just fair, with little in the way of wiring—just a couple of hoses. Undercarriage detailing is good but there is no suspension. If you’re a collector of these “working hardware” type images (as I am), this will be a nice addition to your collection. Try an after-market seller though: one, to try to get a lower price and, two, because I don’t think DM carries it any longer in its inventory. The issue price is $111 + $6 S&H. (11/22/2003) |
