An all-time favorite "everyman's" classic or hot rod candidate, the DM Forty Deluxe is replicated fairly well. But this seems to be one of those automotive forms that are devilish to portray in miniature, where little interpretation errors become more apparent than with most models. Headlights, bumpers and running boards are nicely executed; but the grille should be a little taller, should not tilt slightly rearwards at the top, and its horizontal bars should vee upward just a bit from centerline. These little shortcomings just jump out at you, as do the moderate gaps in the hood and trunk lid shut lines. Outboard hinges are hinted at on the doors, but the traditional dogleg is (alas) the actual hinging medium; so what are represented as hinges actually move away from the bodywork as the doors are opened. Getting past this, the interior is nicely done, with good steering wheel, column shift, dashboard and door panels-and very genuine-looking mohair upholstery. Engine compartment detailing is to a high standard, though ignition wiring is absent. Wheels look superb with hubcaps, trim rings and even full chrome inserts. The trunk is fitted with a realistic rubber mat and spare wheel/tire. Until a better Forty comes along, this will do; but a retool with grille revised to current high Danbury standards, plus snug shut lines and correct door hinging, would win my heart. The issue price is $109 + $5.80 S&H. (07/28/1998) (07/28/1998) |
