THIS MODEL WAS RETIRED 6/30/04. One of my favorite models, but a "sleeper" on the D4C auction, where it sometimes goes for a song. This one opened my eyes to precision diecast car collecting, though admittedly I've always loved this Merc--as have hundreds of customizers. Proportions are captured to perfection, and the grill, wheel discs and ornamentation are little works of art. Window surrounds, side trim, door handles and lighting are crisply and exactingly portrayed. I usually don't care for a black finish on models, but can picture nothing better on this one. It's onyx smooth, and a joy to polish when dust gets noticeable. The doors hinge correctly inside the jams. ATTENTION DM: please get back on track with this feature!! Inside, the dashboard is finely replicated and speedometer is readable. The steering wheel has horn ring and tinted plastic hub insert nicely picked out with paint, and the seats have that period "mousehair" look (though not the side panels). The bright sill plates carry the "M" monogram. Careful attention is given the engine compartment, with oil bath air filter, oil filter, generator, belts and heater hoses accurately accounted for. Ignition wiring would've been nice on the flathead engine, the radio mast is a little heavy, and wipers are integral with the windshield surround; but hey, this is a 1992 model. Though not quite state-of-the-art, this honey is still four stars. The issue price is $112 + S&H. (07/31/1998) (07/31/1998) |
