DISCONTINUED 9/10/05. When I was a hard-charging young man, stationed in the great state of Alabama (Ft. Rucker), I zoomed around in a '67 Olds Cutlass. I was on the 6-lane leaving Dothan, doing 70-mph, when a young woman of color in a '68 Chevelle pulled alongside. I looked to my left. She flashed me a smile. In seconds we were up to 110. I was enthused about my car's performance when she pulled away like the Chevelle had an afterburner. I actually glanced at my right foot to see if it was still on the loud pedal! The last thing I remember seeing was "SS" on the taillight strip, receding very quickly. Ouch! My ego survived, however, for I was beaten by the mighty "SS-396."

DM's image of the car in question, arguably one of the cleanest designs of the '60s, is spot-on. It looks deceptively plain but contains a wealth of detailing. All the goodies we look for are there: flawless paint in Matador Red and Tuxedo Black, beautiful chrome, working suspension, tilting seats (with belts), and exceptional dash and undercarriage detailing. Two notable items make this baby stand out for me, however. One is exquisite under-the-hood detailing, including an air conditioner with all the plumbing. Second, the rear license plate tilts down to reveal the gas cap. It made me want to reach for a gas nozzle to fill it up!

I received this model in error (rare for DM) when I ordered the '69 GTO Judge and, even after ogling THAT beautiful image, one look at this Chevelle told me it wasn't going back. It'll look great with my DM '68 El Camino SS-396. Do '60s muscle cars rev your motor? Don't pass this one up as "just another Chevy". The issue price is $109 +$5.80 S&H. (11/6/1999)
