DISCONTINUED 12/31/04. "Unique In All the World"....that's how Ford advertised its third generation Thunderbird. when it was introduced in 1961. Everybody wanted the swoopy convertible with its hidden top and smooth lines...a real nice ride for $5000! Along came '62, and the bodacious Sports Roadster...a special limited edition model that would set the USA on its ear in 1962!!! Now DM has gone and done their magic in 1/24 scale and the results are...EXCELLENT.
DM's usual "little things" abound...this time it's the Swing-Away steering column and the handy glovebox in the center console...but the real pizzaz is the depiction of the Convertible...something that's almost worth the entire price of admission!!! Carefully opening the reverse opening rear deck (read the instructions CAREFULLY, or you may break the car!!), you will notice, not only a Kelsey-Hayes wire wheel mounted on a narrow band whitewall tire, but an accurate depiction of the LOWERED TOP as it stows on the floor of the trunk. I think DM was going for a fully operating top, but
couldn't carry it off to their own high standards!!!
Everything fits and is finished to the usual DM level of quality; the model is striking and hauntingly accurate. Even the engine, the beautifully detailed 390 CID V8 with 3x2bbl
carbs is special...only 120 of these engines ever found their way into a Thunderbird (let alone a Sports Roadster) in 1962. This is another 5 star babe from DM...it's a must have in my book, but then, I was getting my driver's license that year, and THAT'S the car I wanted....what I actually got was quite a story for quite another time!! Put this Bird on your shelf!!! It's a winner! The issue price is $109 + $5.80 S&H. (3/24/98)
