In 1937, Chevy entered their new pickup in the Second Annual Safe Driving Test, a 10, 244 mile jaunt that circled the nation. When the dust settled, and the engine was switched off at the end of the test, the sturdy little ½ ton had managed 31 mph and less than a penny-a-mile operating cost for the whole trip. Publicity like that is priceless. The 1:24 scale model of this truck by the pickup kings at Danbury Mint is the kind of jewel that reminds me why I collect '30s vintage pickup models. In the right light, the Bordeaux Maroon body, with black fenders looks positively elegant! All the fine details are sharply rendered and crackle with authenticity. A pickup-load of features like tilt-out windshield, removable seat, under-the-bed-mounted spare tire, a working rear suspension and tailgate, coupled with accessories like razor-sharp yellow pinstripes, fog lights, dual side-view mirrors, searchlight and a nifty side-mounted radio antenna, all work together to make this little beauty a standout in any truck collection. I used to think the 1935 Ford pickup was beautiful but this Chevy gives it a run for the money. With a pickup truck this good-looking, who would need to own a car? Makes me want to put on my John Deere ball cap and head down to the feed store. The issue price is $118 + S&H. (12/01/1998) (12/01/1998) |
