The 1938 Ford Stake truck is the 7th and final issue in the Danbury Mints "Budweiser" series. Like most of the other
trucks in the series, this one has special detailing to individualize it. Although the DM makes a '38 Ford pickup, the only components that the new truck acquires from it is the cab and the engine. The cab sits higher and is mounted on a much beefier chassis. Larger front fenders, front bumper and brackets and the running boards are unique to this model. DM's attention to details is evident as usual. These include the removeable seat cushion to reveal a jack and tools, a nice dash with all knobs and controls, a spare that's secured in its tire rack by a retaining bar, a tailight complete with its feed wire and a fully plumbed engine bay. Even the choke cable is included. The alligator hood closes so tightly that you cannot see the seam where the hood meets at the pinstripes.
The platform is lined with hardwood boards separated by steel skid strips. Forty aluminum (not wood) beer kegs that come with the model can be loaded on the bed and surrounded by wood stakes. The stake sections interlock with brass latches and the front half of the side pieces are hinged and can be swung open.
Heavier duty tires are on stamped steel wheels with chrome dish-type hubcaps adorned with a V-8 logo. Here is where I ran into a problem. The DM claims this to be a 1 1/2 ton rated truck. Doing some research, the highest rated Ford truck that utilizes single rear wheels is rated at 1 ton. If this is the case, then this model should be equipped with dual rear wheels. But I can be wrong. Aside from that questionable detail, this is another fine diecast from the DM and I hope there will be more. The price is $149.00 + S&H. (11/15/1999)
