For 1955 head of Chrysler engineering, Bob Rodger, got approval for a new "image car". Using the New Yorker coupe body, a mixture of Windsor and Imperial trim, a custom leather interior, "export" suspension and the hemi-head V-8 engine, which was modified to 300 horsepower, he created the legendary 'Chrysler 300'. For 1957 Chrysler styling vice president Virgil Exner introduced the high-style "Foward Look" design with its low belt lines, thin roof profiles and high sweeping tailfins. The 300C benefited from this re-style with an aggressive front grille and the first 300 convertible. DM captures the 300 perfectly, and excels in the details. The body is perfectly proportioned, and incorporates correct reproductions of door and hood hinges. All they need is to have been painted body color to be perfect. Small details abound such as the open front grille, photo-etched headlamp surrounds with screw head detail, working door locks, opening fuel filler door and even representations of the lowered door and quarter windows. The more you look the more you notice. The engine is well detailed with many separate parts, along with the necessary lines, wires and hoses that tie the engine to the engine compartment. The chassis is extremely accurate with correctly routed exhaust, transmission cooling lines and smoothly working suspension. The interior is highly detailed; even real leather covers the seats. The dashboard and door panels have great depth and fidelity. Many separate parts are used. Even Chrysler's Hiway Hi-Fi (16 2/3rd rpm records) is here. Above the working sunvisors you can mount the well proportioned, cloth covered, up-top. This model shows extreme care to engineering detail and overall proportion. It further proves that DM is serious about the collector market. A five star achievement. The issue price is $112 + S&H. (1/6/1999) (01/07/1999) |
