The Danbury Mint has made another left turn in the road and is taking the Suburban route. The Suburban is more than a simple rehash of the '41 panel delivery as one might expect. Although it shares many components with the panel delivery (as do the 1:1 trucks) it has its own unique features. One is the body casting, entirely different because of all the side windows. Thus, the interior panels are unique to this body style. The front seats, covered in leather, are split 60 / 40 style instead of 50 / 50 and both tip forward to reveal the toolbox. The two rear bench seats are packaged separately and are installed into place with special tweezers that comes with the model. This diecast is painted in Swift's Red with black fenders. The finish is blemish-free. A thin black molding runs along the beltline from the grille to the rear doors and incorporates an even thinner chrome strip . These delicate pieces are straight as an arrow. The side doors even have "mini-latches" which give one the impression that they're snapping shut. The working suspension has just the right amount of tension to suggest a firm riding truck, and it was. This is a very well done diecast replica, even by DM standards. Surprisingly (to me at least) the sun visor was not used on this Suburban but it easily rates 5-STARS. Another DM triumph. The issue price is $135 + S&H. (12/21/1998) |
