The Rocket V8 lineage that began in 1949, reached its affordable performance zenith in 1970 with the 370 h.p. 442 W-30. The beast was also a beauty, the 1968-72 Cutlass body being one the more pleasing of the era. We have here a replica that pays tribute to style and power at the crossroads, just before crashworthiness and emissions standards took over Detroit's agenda for years to come.

The degree to which Danbury has captured the look of the 1:1 car must remain in the eye of the beholder. To mine, accuracy from the cowl forward suffers, the subtle convex form of the fender line having been rendered taught and excessively tapered. Consequently the grill openings are compressed, and also dip uncharacteristically to center - almost in the Pontiac tradition. In nearly all other respects, however, the model is superb. Opening features operate and fit with precision, and trim and lighting are exquisitely miniaturized. Interior detailing includes amazing photo-etched seat belt buckles and simulated walnut trim. Wet-look upholstery and "floating" sun visors detract here slightly. The 455 c.i. monster motor is replete with fine detail, including the foam rubber ring around the air filter housing, which seals the induction system against the twin-scooped hood. This, and special body striping, defined the W-30 option.

One should see this replica before deciding if its flaws are fatal, for there is also much to recommend it. The issue price is $109 + $5.80 S&H. (05/29/1999)
