OK, you're Daimler-Chrysler, the 500 pound gorilla in a room full of midgets. Vickers puts up Rolls-Royce/Bentley for sale; you want it, and you're outbid by.....Volkswagen. There's only one course of action here: resurrect the Maybach marque and go head-to-head with the now BMW Rolls for the fastest, biggest, longest (and any other superlative you can think of) super-luxemobile on this planet. For the longest model, the Maybach 62 is built on the V240 chassis, measuring out to over 20' (or 62 decimeters). For the fastest, the M-B 550hp V12 is used and for the 62S, a 612hp twin-turbo AMG version is employed. For the most luxurious, overengineered and over the top executive jet on wheels, the base price is $386,500 and can be optioned to $516,500 delivered. Options available supposedly provide 2 million possible configurations, so it's unlikely yours will look like your neighbor's. Much AUTOart's credit, you do get some great options on this little 1/43 including the panoramic sunroof impregnated with liquid crystal and a sliding membrane between the infrared blocking glass panels that can provide opacity during the day, or bath you in a soothing orange glow at night with intensity controlled by a small wheel on your rear console. On the 1:1, it's a $25,000 option. This model is tutone Himalayas Grey Dark with Caspian Black metallic on the body sides separated by thin chrome molding. The only thing that mars the sleek lines is the photoetched Maybach monogram hood ornament. The 7-spoke wheels are nicely modeled as are the discs and calipers visible behind the spokes. The operating feature on this car is posable wheels, which give the model a bit more character than the static straight ahead look. The front and rear sunroofs look great on this model and, just as importantly, help to show off its star feature, the interior. You really need to get out the magnifiers to appreciate what a great job Aa did replicating the materials, textures and fine features of this luxury mini-penthouse. The color separation and paint detailing is first rate. It was a bit difficult to show every aspect of it in the photos. Fortunately, the glazing is crystal clear and distortion free, so you'll get a pretty good idea just how nice it really is. All in all, it's a very well done piece that will give you just a tiny peek into how the super-rich spend their daily commute. (07/01/2007) |
