EVO. That’s short for Evolution. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Japan has been producing these rally-inspired cars since 1992. The Lancer Evolution brings a rich history of rally racing to the streets of today. The latest EVO model was introduced at the 2005 NY International Auto Show. The EVO IX’s changes from previous years were subtle in cosmetics but more evident under the hood. Added to the exterior were oval air intakes on the front bumper grille, larger air dams under the headlamps and a sharper looking aero package that included some futuristic looking row of roof mounted fins. Mitsubishi boosted the EVO IX with MIVEC technology (variable valve timing) which punched the power output to 295 hp, although most tests hinted at far more horses racing inside the hood. For 2006, the GSR got a 5-Speed included as part of the basic package, something that was not offered the previous year. While not a luxury-oriented sports car, the EVO IX GSR, with it’s Recaro Sports Seats, functional, no-frills interior, superb handling capabilities and true-blue Rally Racing heritage, is a perfect fit for the driver desiring to experience a little bit of the race in her/his everyday driving.

Auto art has released several EVO models faithfully. This little rally-inspired EVO is a hot number in Yellow. Everything you’ve come to expect from Auto art is once again evident the newly released Mitsubishi Lancer EVO IX GSR. Opening hood, trunk and all four doors are replicated to precision 1/18 scale. The shut lines are tight and the Yellow pain is glossy and deep. Exterior details are faithfully replicated and the car looks ready race even though it’s sitting on the shelf. The triple lamp headlights, the row of small fins mounted on the rear of roof, accurately scaled antenna, rear race spoiler with carbon fiber center bar and real metal mesh on the hood, grille and bumper all make this model an outstanding replica of Mitsubishi’s trendy real car. The Mitsubishi emblems are silver chrome badges that enhance the look of the car. No tampos here. As is typical of Auto art models, the tires are real rubber with realistic tread.

Once you open the doors, you’ll note that the EVO interior isn’t exactly a luxurious place. Functionality is the focus over self-indulgence. But don’t get me wrong, there are outstanding interior features in this car, with the Recaro Racing Seats being the stars. With realistic plastic that looks like leather and a material that appears to be real scale velour, the front and rear seats are a real treat. The rest of the interior is sparse but attractive, with lots of imitation carbon and titanium in all the right places. The carpeting is not overly plush, much like the real car. This model is RHD for those of you who are sticklers about these things.

The attention to detail doesn’t end under the hood. The engine is a faithful reproduction of the potent EVO powerplant. Even though there isn’t much to see in today’s modern engines, Auto art has made the details stand out.

If your passion is for sporty, expensive Japanese cars that are borderline Rally cars, the AA Mitsubishi Lancer EVO IX GSR is one little screamer to add to your collection.
