The R32 Skyline GTR was introduced in 1989 built to Japanese Group A specs and this awesome road car was the product of the required homologation. Arguably the most advanced GT car of its time, the GT-R was loaded with revolutionary technology that included all-wheel drive, limited rear steering, and variable front-to-rear torque splitting, as well as left-to-right rear wheel transfer.... ideal for drifting. The 24 valve, DOHC 2.6 liter inline 6 cylinder sported twin turbos, front mounted intercooler with multiport fuel injection was rated at 280hp, but tuned versions have produced 550hp from virtually the same setup. The V-Spec or Victory Specification version is the most race-worthy Skyline GT-R. It uses a stiffer suspension and a revised all-wheel-drive system, as well as 17inch 225/50 tires and larger Brembo ventilated discs all around. The total package with performance stats like 0-60 in 4.7 seconds made this car quicker, more nimble and responsive than even its successors, aided by the fact it was also the lightest. Its killer track performance was responsible for it being given the nickname "Godzilla" . This pocket rocket defines the term "sleeper car". The styling queues are simple, appear somewhat dated and there's little to separate the GT-R from the standard Skyline. But every bulge, subtle ground effects add-on and the slightly oversized spoiler were all race track proven. The interior of this RHD coupe offers race-worthy but comfortable seats, digital climate control and full power assist for creature comforts, yet there are comprehensive gauges and excellent ergonomics that allow the daily commuter to move well in more exotic circles. AUTOart has produced a fine model of this historically significant automobile, choosing the last variant of the R32, the V-Spec ll introduced in 1993 when rule changes allowed the 17" wheels. Smooth paint, tight shutlines, proper hinging, beautiful lenses and nicely modeled spidery BBS wheels that show off the Brembo discs make this Plain Jane coupe look absolutely imposing. The interior has lush velour tutone blue/gray seating ensconced in a tutone gray interior. Cloth restaint systems with diecut metal hardware, scale piled carpeting on the floor, rear deck and trunk, full headliner with dome light and articulating visors are just some of the realistic features. The seats are beautifully sculpted and executed, but, oddly, do not articulate. The gauges on the instrument cluster and console are bright and legible. All glazing is present and they are of scale thickness and optically crystal clear. The hood opens on inaccurate arc hinges and is propped with a metal rod. The engine bay is a fair represntation of the 1:1 with the signage and spec stickers replicated. Much of the plumbing and wiring is replicated but the extensive hydraulic lines of the complex brake system were not even simulated. The undercarriage is the weakest part of this model. The suspension is static. The basic components are there, but the front wheel drive axles do not reach or articulate with the wheels, there are no brake or fuel lines and the mounting holes and fixation screws are obtrusive, so save your mirrored base for another model. All in all, this model has a great presence and displays quite well. Although the Skyline model was never introduced into the US market, its worldwide reputation has secured it a well deserved place in automotive history. (09/20/2006) |
