This #3 917K won the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1971 at an average speed of 112.86 mph. It was the fastest average speed since the race began in 1952. Even more impressive is that this average held up until 1985. The Porsche 962 driven that year by Foyt/Wollek averaged 113.78 to eclipse the '71 mark.
The 5 litre 12 cylinder Porsche 917K won the '71 Sebring by 3 laps and covered an exhausting 1352 miles. Interestingly, Porsche has won more Sebring races at 17 than any other carmaker. Ferrari comes in second, winning 12. AUTOart picked a fitting car to be included in their 917K series. Although the Steve McQueen #20 may be highly popular, I'll put my money on this bad boy. Absolutely dazzling to the eye of a race fan or car buff, this replica boasts a magnificent paint scheme. The silver is highly metallic and silky smooth to the touch. The multi-stripe red and dark and light blue traverse the door hinges in the roof and unto the engine cover hinges. Never missing a beat or showing any flaw, the model appears extremely realistic. The nose hatch removes to show dynamic detail up front. So does the cockpit. Seats of thick texture with race-born safety harnesses are exciting but pop that engine hatch for a look at the heart of a champion. The wide racing tires are evident as is the required spare, anemic in comparison but flip the diecast over for a better look. You will see the beefy treads, twelve black exhausts as they snake their way rearward and the bottom of the massive motor. Brake rotors rotate past the calipers in fine AA fashion.
