The BMW 320i (E46) was a racing stalwart of several GT series. Two models by AUTO art pay tribute to this remarkable car. The #15 car driven by Jorg Muller won the Macau Guia Race. This is part of the famous series of races held each November in Macau that include motorcycles and formula racers. The "Guia" is a rare street course for GT racers. The #1 car driven by Andy Priaulx is a WTCC (World Touring Car Championship) model. The WTCC is an FIA sanctioned series that runs an international schedule. Both models have a brilliant base coat of white paint. I really like the almost violent splashes of color the Priaulx model uses, the deep red, blue and black a stunning contrast to the milky white undercoat. What's groovy about the Muller model are the enigmatic Chinese characters interspersed throughout the model. The models have quite a few intricate details, surprising me a bit given that they are sealed models. There are hood locks, tow rings, enameled badging, Michelin rubber and good brake articulation. Details like me open exhaust ports crafted from metal are a real plus. Stance appears slightly shovel-nosed and track appears to be dead on. Roll cages are complex and most interior detail is easily visible. Just not touchable. Throw on top of all this AUTOP art's sublime headlights, tailights and lustrous chrome and you're still getting pretty good bang for the buck. I like these two models. They are both unusual subjects in a sea of GT look-alike models. Something out of the ordinary, wouldn't you agree? (09/29/2006) |
