The Mercedes 300 SL was a key turning point for Mercedes. Their factories had been devastated in the war and they had lost their place of honor in the racing circuit. The 300 was their bid to regain their reputation for performance, and with the advent of the SL (Sport Light) version they succeded, winning numerous races in 1952. In 1954 Max Hoffman, an American importer, contracted for a road version of the 300 SL Gullwing and it was very popular in the States. This prompted the introduction of the Roadster version in 1957.

The 300 SL Roadster is considered by many to be the most desirable ragtop every built. And fortunately this Bburago model, which is the only currently available replica in this scale, is a very pleasant surprise. It is very well detailed, worthy of a much more expensive model. The paint is sharp and smooth, and the elegant body style is well represented. It has chrome trim in the fenders, trim & side vents, windshield vent, rear-view mirror, hub caps, door handles and even a separate key hole. The eye-catching front grille is black with chrome trim & emblem. Hood and trunk open with good fit, they are well painted underneath, and the doors are properly hinged - no doglegs here! The engine, while not wired or super-detailed, is assembled in several colors and is a faithful replica of this unique-looking powerplant. There's even a spare in the trunk.

But the real treat is the interior. The upholstery, while all hard plastic, still looks very good. The sun visors have chrome inserts for the mirrors - how often is that seen in a model under $50? The dashboard is a combination of realistic decals and a full set of chrome knobs and sliders. The steering wheel, shifter and pedals look great. The overall effect of all this detail is fantastic. Whoever designed this replica must have loved this car, and it shows. Bravo Bburago!
