OK, the fun cheapie of the month goes to Bburago for their Porsche 911 type 993 diecast kit in 1/24. For a couple of bucks and some paint and elbow grease, you can add this to your Porsche stable and it displays very well. I enjoy these kits for their brilliant racing graphics alone. The waterslides are by Cartograf and they're always brilliant, crisp, opaque and on register. The diecast itself is really well done for the pricepoint. The body is dead on, the glazing is crystal clear and the lenses are all precolored, detailed plastic. Doors and engine cover are operational and the doglegs are pretty darned unobtrusive. The two piece engine is chromed but ingeniously textured to mimic different types of metals and parts (castings, forged, rolled) and looks quite good. The interior is finely detailed and textured... even the Porche script is on the floor mats. I enhanced the look with washes, paints and pastels to exagerate the texture differences between the various materials modeled. Black-on-black-on dark gray is like trying to find a black cat in a coal mine.

The exterior paint is thickly applied with a hint of orange peel. 2-10K grit sanding pads and polish got the car gleaming and I almost decided not to apply the livery. The application of the livery was the most exhausting aspect of the project. Solvaset is a must for snuggling the transfers into the shutlines compound curves and panel lines. The one thing about transfers over gloos black is that any extra carrier film sticks out visually, so although the groupings of many of the livery components are connected by carrier film to provide accurate spacing, I either pretrimmed, or when necessary trimmed the film off just as the transfer reached its initial set. An extremely sharp curved scalpel blade is a must here. I keep an oiled honing stone on the desk and will resharpen often during the procedure.
