The first Eagle in Carousel 1's modern Indy car series was the 1975 Indy 500 winner...the #48 Jorgensen Special. The second is the 1973 #2 Sugaripe Prune Special. There were many changes between the two machines, all of which are reflected in this new release due in May. When the Eagles debuted in 1972, they were a major improvement in terms of design and speed. The dual element rear wing was fitted in 1973 and was a development of the single plane wing fitted in 1972. They were huge and provided massive downforce.. this led the USAC tech guys to specify a smaller rear wing that was fitted in 1975, but the change really did little to slow the cars. The entire top body section, roll bar, roll bar support, upswept fuel injection system and single plane front wing are all parts that differ from the #48 car and match the style of these Indy trackburners. Gordy Johncock won in '73 in a rain-shortened race. The #2 machine was piloted by Bill Vukovich, Jr. In his career, it was the closest that Bill would get to winning the "Big One"!! Information is provided by Bob Johnson, chief designer at Carousel 1 and erstwhile diecast color commentator for QVC. (03/05/2001) |
