It was America's Bicentennial and the “Gas Man” Tom Sneva put this beautiful red, white and blue McLaren on the front row at the Indy 500. Penske Racing was counting on their McLarens and Sneva and teammate Mario Andretti were willing to deliver. Just a year earlier Sneva had barely escaped tragedy in a dramatic collision in the race.
But for the third time in four years, Mother Nature had other plans. At lap 102, the race was halted due to rain, never to restart. Only 255 miles or 102 laps were completed, making it the shortest Indy 500® in history. A Penske victory would have to wait. Sneva, who would win Indy in 1983, was in 6th position when the contest was halted.
This is the third model in Carousel 1's Penske series and arguably the most beautiful. In big 1:18 scale detail, you can get the feel of the race from the cockpit… how it must have looked as the thunder on the track was matched by thunder above. Open the hood and remove the cowling, to revel in Carousel 1's attention to historic detail! A must have for open wheel race collectors.
