In 1965, Jim Clark’s victory in the Lotus Type 38 proved to the world the indomitable value of mid-engined design. In 1966, his new teammate was a 26 year old Al Unser in only his second year of racing. Back then you didn’t have to say Al Unser Sr. to identify him. Who knew the then young elder Al would later become a four time Indy 500 winner!
Carousel 1 has done his Lotus Type 38 full justice. The twin exhaust pipes emerging from the “nest-of-snakes” is a beautiful sculpture growing behind the cockpit. The cockpit is so meticulously rendered that it creates the feeling of being cramped in a miniaturized scale. And the rambunctious orange and white livery makes the Lotus look even faster - if that's possible. The STP sponsorship of Unser’s car was at the very beginning of that company’s legendary commitment to racing.
