November 1952: The supremacy of the Mercedes-Benz 6-cyl 300SL had been established in the most legendary European races, but still missing was a competition with a unique glamour all its own: the "Carrera Panamericana". Going South from the Texas border, it was an 8 lap, 3371 km trip through the unrivalled Mexican scenery: not just a race, but a grueling test for men and machines! MB lined up two coupes and a roadster, and emotions ran high! The race was true to its nature. A vulture crashed into the windscreen of driver Kling's car, injuring his co-driver, Klenk. Windscreen changed, protection bars added, Kling kept dueling with Bracco, in a Ferrari, until it failed. Kling/Klenk won, Lang/Grupp followed! Back home, Kling was saluted as a national hero! The 300SL could now rest, in a flurry of feathers, its 'educated cousin' would soon be hitting the streets…

The CMC rendition of the 300SL is thrilling! The aerodynamic line is perfectly carved and sealed in flawless Silver. A set of labels, decals and tampo prints combine to replicate the racing regalia. The unmistakeable front grille stands out, together with the exquisite lamps and trunk emblems. The tiny windshield bars are metal, as are the photo-etched wipers. Velour carpeting, tartan seats and leather dashboard lavishly fit the interior, complete down to the photo-etched "300SL" writing! Even the vents on the side windows operate! Two spare wheels fill the trunk, in true racing trim. Held by a delicate leather strap, the bonnet hides an engine bay, crammed with detail! The wheels are excellent, along with the Continental tires. Minor criticisms: the "gullwings" touch each other before reaching the full-open position; the rendition of the floor-pan seems a bit too simplified. A full-size replica of the medal awarded to K.Kling by the German Department of Transportation is included! Just a trifle short of reaching 5 stars, this model is a 'winner'! The issue price is $149.
