1955 was a watershed year for Chevy. That year the brand transformed its image from a source of practical family cars to a player in the performance market. Its resurgence was typified by the all new V-8 Bel Air. The Turbo-Fire V-8 gave it instant street credibility. On the track, turnpike or high school parking lot. The Chevy also got an all new design by Harley Earl that helped the car smash all sales records. With its slightly bulbous hood and single, "eye-browed" headlights flanking a Ferrari-inspired grille, the '55 Chevy is one of the classics of the era. All this earned the 55 Bel Air Convertible the honor of pacing the ’55 Indy 500. The pace car roared around in Chevy’s new 265 c.i. overhead-valve V-8, featuring a Rochester four-barrel car, big manifold and dual exhausts. ERTL has captured the magic of this year for Chevy and the pageantry of the event in its 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible in a vibrant red with Ivory Tutone treatment. This version sports the popular add-on "Continental Kit" – for transporting the spare tire in the most stylish way possible. This model can be presented with top up or top down using the supplied convertible boot. (05/23/2004) |
