To my eyes this is the best looking Porsche 935 in the evolution of the breed and in Exoto’s growing fleet of 935 twin-turbo models. In striking red and yellow Momo livery with the horizontal side sail fins, an early ground effects enhancement and air directional aid to the rear intakes, the model is immediately handsome and will stand out in any 1:18th collection. Intricate detailing covers this model like spots on a cheetah. We may have gotten used to removable wheels and maybe even the sight of the drilled rotors and calipers once the wheel is off. But I’ll never grow tired of looking at the fascinating detail of the engine, tranny and twin turbo plumbing and wiring. The blue and red simulated anodized couplings; braided fuel lines and throttle linkage add an incredible amount of detail interest to this model. From front to back there is a look to see and like on this highly successful racer. The fuel cell cover has four Dzus fasteners on each corner but under it is a greater wealth of modeling art. The tubular cross-bracing members show impeccable tiny weld detail at the center, the fuel cells themselves sport flexible fuel tubing and cooling hoses can readily be seen. A close look will even reveal battery cable connections. Moving rearward, you’ll notice the fine craftsmanship on the wiper and six metal windshield clips. The interior yields an abundance of goodies that we’ll not tire of too soon either. Lift the driver’s window safety netting to see it all. The racing bucket has fabric safety belts and the roll cage feels as realistic as the 1:1 with its tubular structure entirely foam-covered. Flexible rubber fabrication here, pulls this off nicely. Chrome foil simulates the clamps that hold it in place. The steering wheel, dash, gauges and floor levers lend more of a sense of the serious job at hand here. Two metal strips hold the rear window tightly in place. Two metal mesh-covered air intakes adorn the tops of the rear fenders. The metal rivets that secure the mounting plate over the right side intake screen are easily visible. Opening the winged engine hatch cover shows the secret of Porsche’s great success, the twin-turbo flat six. Topside the cooling fan turns. Below, we have an unobstructed view of the turbos themselves, heat-affected exhaust pipes and the pliable suspension components. The look of the purpose-built rear bodywork to exhaust heat, appears like a maniac was set loose in an air condition factory and used what ducting he found to fabricate the 935’s butt end. The slicks are properly scuffed and ready for action and the car, in total, stance-wise and with perfect fit and finish, looks ready to take on today’s best competition. Once again, Exoto astounds the detail sense in us collectors with this beautiful Momo Porsche. 5 out of 5 on the drool index meter! (06/18/2004) |
