'Ultimate diecast precision' has a new address: Exoto. 'Extreme detail precision' has a new name: The 1989 Sauber-Mercedes C9. Just when you think that there is no earthly way a 1:18th replica could pack in more precision detail or functioning features, Exoto pulls out a trump card. This model was fabricated by using every conceivable type of material used in today and tomorrow's modeling and die-casting circles with apparent disdain for price. A model this good, with technology unheard of even a year ago, would probably command more money if done in smaller numbers. Easily passing for a one-off, this little car has detail in spades and the fit of a model produced by laser-guided machinery. The doors are so tight as to appear inoperable. The same thing holds true for the front and rear body applications. Taken off, let's explore the incredible detail-rich features hidden underneath. Up front you will see the working suspension, precise steering, rubber and wire mesh air ducting and the vinyl radiator hoses leading from the photo-etched water cooler. In the driver's cockpit, you will be blown away by the working gearshift and linkage that ends up back at the transaxle. Of course the dash and photo-etched seat belt trimmings lend an awesome air of realism to the interior.
Exoto furnishes a wheel tool with the model. Unscrew the lug nut and your jaw may drop. Details come to life as if they were 1:1. The brake rotors rotate within the BremboŽ discs. They are scuffed as if from racing and match the scuffed slicks.
The ace in the hole, however, lies under the rear body panel. The working springs are perfect miniatures of the real article. Braided hydraulic hoses, fuel lines, wiring, tubing, rubber ducting, simulated carbon fiber, discolored exhaust, it's all here and exquisitely done. The paint on the Silver Arrow tops off this elegant piece. Exoto has gone the extra mile on this one and it really shows. Out of five stars, this deserves 7!
