One of the most famous Formula One racing machines from the past was the John Player Special of 1972. The Lotus-Ford 72D was Colin Chapman's masterpiece of engineering. His racers' featured low hip radiators, a sculpted airbox (scoop) and the out-riggered wing above the oil tank. Exoto has captured every detail of this historical monocoque open wheel racecar. The lustrous black paint has a "one-foot deep" shine that is absolutely flawless. And the multitude of gold tampo graphics only enhance the impeccable finish. Photo etched pieces are liberally used throughout , such as the radiator and oil tank grilles, gas and oil caps, etc. The Cosworth Ford DOHC powerplant is a detail wonder in itself, really a model within a model. From the velocity stacks to the tuned curvaceous exhaust headers to the air-cooled oil pan, not a detail has been overlooked. Every fuel line, every oil line, every individual spark plug wire, all the hoses and related plumbing are in their proper place. Each bolt has been painstakingly picked out on the black crackle valve covers. The front and rear independent suspensions are functional and are exact in all respects, the front wheels operate with the steering wheel. The titanium colored inboard disc brakes rotate within the stationary calipers and also rotate with the rear half shafts and wheels. The front inboard brakes can be viewed thru the cowl vents. The gold anodized knock-off wheels feature aluminum valve stems. Genuine Firestone design slicks have a double gold stripe on each side of each tire. The driver's cockpit hasn't been denied minute details either. "Emmo" is seated and strapped in place with a 5-point fabric harness with photo etched buckles and latch. Photo etched dash guages are wired. In summary, the above review is a casual description of an exquisite replica. Fit, finish and detail are superior to any diecast that I have held or seen. This is the closest that I have ever been or probably will be to a Formula One racecar. A TRUE PRECISION diecast at a bargain price of $120.00 (11/19/1999) (11/19/1999) |
