In its day, the 1970 428 Cobra Jet Sportsroof Mustang was a real high-horsepower monster. A rarely known or understood option in 1970 Mustangs, most enthusiasts naturally gravitate towards the stripes and hood scoops of the Mach I, Boss 302 or Boss 429 at carshows. But today, it is arguably the second most sought-after Ford engine package behind the 289 Hi-Po. And the ultra-sleeper Sportsroof Mustang was available in an even rare Super Cobra Jet "Drag Pack" version.

Ordered as either a Q-code with conventional air cleaner and plain-jane hood, or R-code with shaker-style hood scoop, these Mustangs still draw curious looks. The idea of propelling what appeared to be grandma's snoozer 6-cylinder Sportsroof with a 428 Cobra Jet engine with 335 horsepower and 440 foot-pounds of torque is unsettling even today. Then add the 428 Super Cobra Jet "Drag Pack" option which included either of the optional 3.91:1 or Detroit Locker 4.30:1 rear end gear ratios and a true muscle car was born.
