Mattel Hot Wheels 1:24 Ferrari Formula One Racer & CD-ROM

Reviewed by:   Tom Pine

Formula One racing features some of the most exotic, high tech and hi-performance vehicles on wheels. Take a mega-powerful, high revving, V-12 engine; drop it into an aerodynamic body; shoehorn a driver into a tiny cockpit; and you have the “formula” for a wickedly fast and agile racing machine. Sitting on any given straight-away with ones eyes closed, listening to a field of these racers scream by, you would think you’re listening to a swarm of bees. The drivers who pilot these machines are considered the royalty of the racing community.

For all of us 1:24 scale fans, Mattel Hot Wheels Racing has produced (3 so far) a series of 1:24 Formula One racecar images. Essentially static images, the wheels do turn and a driver is included. Where they shine is the amount of small detail they show. Every airfoil, vane, antenna, and other mysterious widget is in evidence, done beautifully to scale. Though I don’t collect racing hardware per se, I found these little beauties irresistible.

In addition, Mattel adds a CD-ROM to the package. The disc has racing sounds, photomontages, wallpaper, and movie clips (if you have a DVD-ROM drive). What makes all this so exciting for collectors is the minimal price—I paid $25 for my Ferrari. Each example comes in a decent-looking, clear plastic display box that uses the CD-ROM for a backdrop. Mattel also produces McLaren and WilliamsF1 Team images as well.

Automobile racing has always provided a high performance, high-risk form of excitement for those who feel the “need for speed.” There’s a reason the phrase, “Race on Sunday, sell on Monday,” became a byword for auto salesmen.
