One-twelfth scale. Diecast. C6 Corvette. You know what? Size does matter! At least, in some cases, for precision models. And yes, at a price point of $150, the approximately normal cost of a 1:24th scale ‘mint’ car, Mattel Hot Wheels has managed to put enough detail and functionality into a big, impending hulk that commands your attention and garners my respect as a bona fide ‘precision diecast’. Stick it on your coffee table, invite plenty of guests for a Super Bowl party, and be ready to expect this to detract from the game’s conversation. It’s that magnanimous.
Ok, it may not be in the same league as a DM 1:12th Museum Masterpiece, but at a fraction of the cost, can be an awesome presence in your collectibles portfolio. Just ask that Steelers fanatic; he’s looking at it far too longingly.
To my knowledge, Mattel was first out with the C6 image; I did a Mattel 1:18th 2005 Corvette review (a perfect clone to this image) in January 2004. This model, at a much increased size, is more impressive, obviously. The doors open on internally-built hinges. The engine exhibits infinite detail. The interior is replete with soft ‘feel’ buckets, good dash detail, really cool carpet flocking, fabric belts and an opening console door.
The suspension has ample amounts of ‘give’, to replicate the fully articulating functionality of a 1:1, and the stance, ride height and overall fidelity to the genuine article is faithfully carried out by Mattel.
This may be the bargain of the millennium in terms of cost per size, per detail, per diecast. Don’t let it pass you by, only 2500 of these gargantuan Vettes are available and I got mine!
