This Hertz "Rent-a-Racer" is the standout amongst the three renditions of the 1966 Shelby Mustang Fastback released so far in the Exact Detail Series from Lane. Like the first edition, an Edelbrock Racing equipped SCCA racer (as driven by Camee Edelbrock), and second issue, the supercharged street version, this diecast model is well detailed and very much an "eye-catcher". I believe this will surely be the most collectible version, as it is the one we all let get away in '66. This 1:18th scale diecast features a luscious black finish accented with gold racing stripes. My sample had no more orange peel than the small amountpresent on the original, and the gold stripes were perfectly straight. Frequently neglected areas auch as doorsills and the undersides of both hood and trunk lids are fully painted and detailed. Chromeplating techniques are much improved over the past two years and this model's parts are reflective of that trend. Chrome trim around the windows and door-handles is excellent. Wheels are very nicely detailed and true to the original style. The interior is good although falls somewhat short of the best available on today's market at this price point. The engine compartment is above average but again not quite "mint" quality. A trend that is beginning to be too common is the undercarriage made of plastic. A diecast undercarriage would do wonders for the feel and value of this, and many other, 1:18th scale models in the $75.00 range. The real strength of the Hertz Mustang from Lane is its stunning overall appearance! Few car models will look better sitting on your shelf at any price. (08/29/1999) A significant nymber of these models were produced with the incorrect designation "GT350" on the side panel striping. The correct graphic should read "GT350H" for Hertz. Since this, like all of the models from this series, is a limited edition all error models returned to the manufacturer were destroyed and replaced with corrected versions to maintain edition size. Indications are that most of the large distributors returned their shipments before filling orders, but the number of error cars that remain in collectors' hands is not known at present...G.
