“King of the Muscle Cars”. Well, to all Bowtie enthusiasts, this mighty brute was indeed King, at the drag strip and on the streets, and had every right to be among the top contenders at muscle Car Hill. The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle took the automotive industry by storm. It was attractive and stylish, its aggressive stance sending fear into the hearts of even its fiercest competitors.

In 1970, GM decided to lift the ban on stuffing engines larger than 400 cid in their midsize cars. Chevrolet jumped at the chance to ram a new 454cid into its Chevelle SS lineup. This entry level 454 was termed the LS5 and roared with 360bhp. But the true draw, and the power plant engine all Muscle Car fans coveted, was the LS6, putting out 450bhp. Introduced in 1970 along with the 454 and standard 396 engines was the optional cowl induction hood, with a working flapper that force-fed cold air into the engine. With the cowl induction vents open, you could literally hear the Rochester carburetors roar into the interior. Cars with cowl induction could easily be identified by the bulge erupting from the hood.

Lane Collectibles is well known and respected in the 1/18 hobby for their faithful and detailed replicas of some of America’s most loved Muscle Cars. Although Lane has already released both Convertible and Hardtop versions in Cranberry Red, as well as a Black Convertible, this new release in Fathom Blue has a truly intimidating color scheme. The deep Fathom Blue paint is rich and evenly applied. The White stripes make this Blue really pop and sit perfectly scaled on the hood and trunk. You could say Lane knows “Chevelle”. They’ve rendered this piece just as an artist would his masterwork. This image sits on the shelf like a prowler; its stance screams Muscle Car. I know there were some complaints about the roof line and rear, but to my eyes, this baby is true-blue 1970 Chevelle, captured right down to the working Flap in the Cowl Induction Hood! Tampos are sharp and crisp and the detail in that powerful looking front end is spot on. The SS wheels are finely scaled and tires are real rubber, Goodyear Polyglas with White letters. There is a full size spare tire and bumper jack in the trunk. Lane has replicated the trunk lining perfectly to scale. And folks, this is a heavy image. The heft almost makes you feel like you’re holding the real thing in miniature.

Wanna step inside for a ride? Lane did two runs of these Fathom Blue Chevelles, one with a Black interior and another White. I love the Black interiors because that is the color that brings back memories for me. Again, Lane has hit the nail on the head. The bucket seats truly look and feel like soft vinyl and the woven seat belts will make you think you can actually settle in and buckle up. The gauge cluster is dripping with detail and there is the automatic transmission on the console. Carpeting is dark and rich but not overdone. Hey, this is a Muscle Car after all! They finished off the headliner with a real dome light! Eric and the gang at Lane are always trying new things, tweaking their images to bring collectors a better product. With this Fathom Blue Chevelle, they tried applying decals to the rear shelf speakers and front dashboard vents. The decals are too light, making them a bit distracting to the eye at first glance, but in my opinion, not enough to detract from the desirability of owning this beauty.

Okay, I know you want to know about that LS5 Powerplant. Lane doesn’t drop the ball here either! Open the hood and feast your eyes on a true replica of Chevrolet’s fearsome 454! This one is fully plumbed and wired with steel fuel lines and more detail. You’ll find everything here. This Limited Edition Black interior run numbers only 1,000 pieces.

The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS LS5 was an American automotive icon. Lane Collectibles has captured all its glory and power with this new Fathom Blue. This one isn’t just for Chevelle collectors and not just for Muscle Car collectors. This Lane Chevelle is for collectors who want a High End representation of a true automotive Legend.
