Built to celebrate 50 years of hot-blooded Italian passion in automobiles since 1947, the F50 actually arrived early. Its world debut was made at the Geneva Auto Show March 1995. Only 349 F50's were built. The frame and body are made of composite material with a carbon fiber, Kevlar and Nomex honeycomb. The Fiorano bullet takes its gunpowder from a 520 hp, 8500 rpm V-12. Four overhead camshafts, five valves per cylinder and fuel injection light the short fuse. Get in, sit down, hold on! Maisto's 1/18th translation is a beauty. Fully functional suspension is featured along with the prerequisite opening doors, engine cover, opening front hood and steerable wheels. The engine is fabulously detailed for this inexpensive diecast. Wiring is in place and the working rear springs set off the engine bay nicely. Dual prop rods finish off the effect. Good detailing abounds in the interior including great looking seatbelts, but it's the overall fit and finish that makes the F50 so desirable. I believe the attention to detail gives the Maisto a slight edge over Bburago's iteration of the F50. (08/20/1999) (08/20/1999) |
