I had no intention of purchasing the black Mercedes CLK-DTM #5 by Maisto (2000). However, in the store I was somewhat captivated by the sleek, shiny and what I believe is a very good looking model of the GT Mercedes behind the glass. At first I was disappointed to learn it was by Maisto and I almost dismissed the product without looking closer. When I did look though, I was very pleasantly suprised. This is no ordinary Maisto with little detail, floppy doors and marginal quality control. The wheels are excellent with big wide slicks stamped with Dunlop, silver AP Racing calipers and realistic disc's. The decals are good, the spoiler correct (I believe), the lights very good and the doors are very solid. The underside is lacking in any detail though, and the interior is barely acceptable with unrealistic carbon fiber and poor trimmings and seat. Typical of my two other Maisto racing products, the hood is also very difficult to take off. It requires a significant amount of wrestling to unhook. After doing it a couple times, I found the potential reward the engine compartment offered is just not worth the effort, and am now quite content to leave it covered.

Regardless, I am very pleased that Maisto produced this model. It isn't the most detailed, and is not my favorite car, but it's reasonably priced (C$50) and as long as you're not up close and personal with it, believe it looks amazing. If you are looking for a model to display, and not pick up and examine beyond the external shell, I find that I have very few models in my collection that can match the way this CLK-DTM 2000 looks from 2-3 feet away. I'm quite pleased with it.
