Jacques Saoutchik immigrated from Poland to France in the 1900's. During the 1920's he established his Coach Works in Paris to make custom bodies for Talbot Lagos, Delahayes, Mercedes, etc. After the war he switched to Pegaso, Rolls Royce and Cadillac. The car so authentically recreated by Motor City is a 1948 Cadillac Series 62 Cabriolet, but with a custom body by Saoutchik, allegedly as a gift for Delores Del Rio. The original car is in a private collection in Chicago and has not been seen by the public for many years. The body is a total departure from Cadillac's Detroit offering and it is almost too magnificent for words. It can only be described as lavish, with splashes of chrome on a Black body with Violet fender sweeps. The running gear, dashboard and steering wheel are all that remain from the original Cadillac. This replica of a custom-bodied beauty was first issued as a resin model by Motor City in 1997 and only 80 of a planned 250 were released. Production was halted due to extraordinary costs so that those 80 original buyers now have a very, very rare model. The success of recent Motor City 1:24 metal handcast/handbuilt cars has encouraged Motor City to consider issuing the Saoutchik in a new limited edition in metal. When we posted a brief message to see if there was any interest, the results were overwhelming. The great news is that Motor City has decided to go ahead with this program. The car will feature the same exquisite detail on both exterior and interior as found on the original resin model. The finish will be of the highest quality, equal in every way to quality to the original resin version. (As this is a static or curbside model, please note that it does not have opening doors, trunk or hood.) Because of the enthusiasm and demand created by the recent announcement of this metal model and the influx of orders received, MC has been forced to increase the total allocation to 450. The model is now discontinued. (12/28/2000) (12/28/2000) |
