Minichamps 1:12 McLaren F1 Roadcar

Reviewed by:   Richard A. Arnold

When introduced in 1993, the McLaren F1 was the fastest and most significant production road car of the 20th century, the ultimate driver''s car. Behind the driver is a 627hp/479lb ft 6.1 litre BMW V-12, which was the highest output specific-displacement normally-aspirated engine in production. McLaren called this car F1 because it uses so much Formula One technology. The original sold for $810,000 each; but if you think a used one can be found for less than $1.2 million, dream on.

If that''s beyond your budget, you have an alternative. This model has exquisite detail! The doors swing up to show individual guages and controls. The steering wheel turns the front wheels. Two panels swing up to show the V12 BMW engine and McLaren plumbing. A wind deflector deploys behind those engine covers. A front panel opens to reveal a Kenwood amplifier and other goodies. Right-side panel opens to show coolant filler and storage while left-side panel flips down to reveal battery, fuse boxes and more storage. Drilled brake disks spin with wheels and tires while calipers remain stationary. The word "brembo" is clearly readable in red on each caliper. On my F1, the single huge wiper can swing across the windscreen, but perhaps that wasn't intended since it falls off when the car is inverted.

Minichamps made only 2000 of these beauties in five colors. Even if my collection did not consist largely of BMWs, this jewel would still be a "must have". (Original issue price, $480.) Limited Edition: Sold out
