Proving they aren’t beating a dead horse, Precision Miniatures, they of the legendary dragsters and superlative 1950’s Detroit iron, have once again fashioned a death wagon that’s wicked fun. Previously, they’ve done three hearses as part of their "Sunset Coach" line. Two of these are Caddy’s: a 1959 and a 1938 “Carved Art” version as well as a Ford Model T. This latest iteration is a 1966 Cadillac hearse – probably a version people still see on the roads since these vehicles get very little usage compared to your daily driver.

All four models have similar features such as a rolling church tray, genuine pose-able coffin and embalming fluid. Okay, you got me, no embalming fluid, but you do get a fully articulated coffin cabin. The cabin is fully functional as the wood platform on which the coffin rests is trimmed in chrome and slides back and forth for easy access. The 1966 Caddy makes for an imperial presence - the actual hearse was built by Sayers and Scoville (better known as S&S) using a GM Cadillac commercial chassis. The model is regal in scope at darn near 14” long with significant heft to match.

There is very righteous stuff going on here: the paint is gorgeous, the chrome superb and the trademark Caddy open grid grille blacked out. A collector of this sort of commercial vehicle model will be pleased with the landau top complete with S ornamentation, the S&S logo on the fuel cap, the triple white line sidewalls, logo hubcaps and a Cadillac Chevron and color enameled shield on the hood.

There are compromises on all Precision Miniature hearse models: they all come sans viewable engine and while the front doors open to a decently outfitted cabin, the cantilevered suicide doors do not. The chassis is predictably very basic with a separate exhaust and a utilitarian suspension. But if you're making a buying decision on this model and you can live with the subject matter (so to speak), I'd say choosing not to buy this model because of any of these reasons is misguided. An analogy might be that of a sports car model collector that has the opportunitiy to buy a 1/18 Corvette with an exquisite engine and a sealed trunk.

Precision Miniatures does such a fabulous job with every project that having a hearse before a decent passenger car is made of the same model seems a bit backward. Here's hoping that Precision Miniatures will take a swipe at making a 1959 and 1966 Caddy because these hearse models make you wonder "what if". [And while we're on the subject, why is it that the 1959-66 era of Cadillac seems ignored when it comes to 1/18 scale diecast beyond Anson grade? This era contains some of the most memorable designs in American automotive history. Okay, off my soapbox now...]

There was an album by the 70’s progressive rock group Gentle Giant entitled “Acquiring the Taste” and indeed, four Sunset Coach hearse models deep now, many collectors are doing just that when it comes to these massive models. Like Gentle Giant's small but rabid legion of fans, those that loved them adored them. If you’re a fan of these grim rides folks, this is a model to die for. Let's hope the 1966 Caddy ambulance is not too far behind...
