At the London Rolls Royce showrooms, 14/15 Conduit Street, in May 1925, the Silver Ghost replacement was launched with a new name. It was officially called the Rolls-Royce New Phantom. To a large degree the chassis was identical to that of the Silver Ghost. There was a choice of two wheelbases, 143 1/2 inches or 150 1/2 inches. The power came from a six cylinder in-line engine of 7,668 cc. By 1926 the New Phantom was already known as the Phantom I. The model had become re-christened as such to distinguish it from its successor, the Phantom II. The specs on the 1929 Phantom I were very impressive for its day: Total Built: 2,212 (Derby) 1,241 (Springfield) Engine: 6 cylinder in line configuration Transmission: Single dry plate type clutch, 4 speeds and reverse Chassis: Pressed steel, parallel girder with tubular crossmembers Performance: Max speed, 85 mph (137 km/h) Originally issued in November of 1988, this model is now "Out of Production". Replacing it is a red bodied, black fendered repaint. In addition to the new color it will have silver wheels, whitewall tires and opening trunk. This now 12-year-old model does not offer today's model advancements but is still an elegant Rolls Royce image. The engine exhibits fine detail for 1988. The running boards open to display the tool and jack contents. While the dash only affords decal gauges, all four doors have small unobtrusive hinges and a pivotal front windscreen. The model very well says, long, large and unmistakably Rolls Royce. The issue price is $135. (10/07/2000) (10/07/2000) |
