Here's an unassuming model from FM - the 1938 Alvis. I saw it in an old FM catalog and took a chance based solely on the distinctive chromed hood. I'm glad I did.

Though it's one of the earlier FM offerings, the model doesn't stint on the fine details. I don't know where they found the sickly, pea-green color in the catalog, but the actual model is finished in beautifully applied and polished British Racing Green. The chromed hood is outstanding and eminently sharp-looking. Aside from the engine being a bit simplistic, the chromed wire wheels seem to be correctly proportioned. Handles, mirrors and fittings abound and are nicely scaled. The undercarriage detailing is above average and the windshield even folds down. Two tops are provided for top-up/top-down display. The interior and trunk are carpeted, but the instrument panel gauges are those annoying decals.

I give this one a 7 out of 10. The model will look great in your collection and is a worthy tribute to a low-slung, refined British roadster capable of attaining 100+ mph speeds. Let's see a stiff upper lip for the 1938 Alvis 4.3 litre "Speed Twenty!" The issue price is $120. DISCONTINUED 12/31/1999. (08/10/1998)
